The Bead Curtain

From the series And My Father Before Me.

  • Oil and Cold Wax on Hardboard
  • 12″ x 15″
  • 13 3/4″ x 16 3/4″ with wood frame

This oil and cold wax painting is a striking composition filled with warm, fiery hues of orange, red, and yellow, contrasted with deep black outlines and highlights of white. The texture created by the cold wax medium adds depth and dimension, making the colors appear to glow from within.

The warm, glowing orbs and elongated vertical forms represent beads strung together, creating a rhythmic pattern that draws the viewer’s eye deeper into the composition. The contrast of fiery oranges and deep blacks gives the impression of movement, as if light is filtering through the beads, revealing hidden details. For me, the beads evoked a sense of curiosity and mystery—what secrets are contained in the luminous curling shapes within the beads? What lies beyond the curtain? What is being revealed or concealed?

The Bead Curtain symbolizes mystery, nostalgia, and transitions—the passage between past and future, known and unknown, inside and outside. It invites the viewer to pause at the threshold, to reflect on what they are leaving behind and what they are about to enter.
